Sony Invites Fans to PlayStation Experience Event in December | PlayStation…

17h ago – Sony Social Media Senior Manager Sid Shuman has cordially invites fans to their PlayStation Experience Event in December, 2014 with details below.

To quote: Here we go! I’m happy to announce our very first PlayStation Experience, a massive two-day community event dedicated to the people who bring PlayStation to life: you!

We’ve been planning this bad boy for some time… and with PlayStation’s 20-year anniversary just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

Prepare for two intense days of PlayStation gaming, content, and activities. Attendees will sit in on in-depth panels, meet the industry’s best developers, score hands-on gameplay with tons of upcoming PlayStation games, collect free swag, and get a chance to purchase rare collectibles directly from their favorite game studios. Attendees will also get an exclusive first look at what’s coming next in 2015, which I am told you will not want to miss.

The two-day community event will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 6th and 7th, 2014. And stay tuned for October 20th, when we release details on how you can be part of this legendary event; the one-day pass will cost $50.00, with the two-day pass going for $90. The venue is huge, too, so we’ll have plenty of room and plenty of games. Bring your friends and family (if they are 18 and over)!

If you can’t make it to PlayStation Experience in person (we’ll miss you!), don’t worry.

Per usual, PlayStation.Blog will be offering comprehensive coverage of the event, including breaking news as well as live video through multiple distribution channels. Stay tuned for further details on the event, programming information and much more.

6 things you didn’t know about PlayStation TV

If you’re a video gamer, you might be getting your thumbs ready for Sony’s PlayStation TV, a new and relatively affordable micro console debuting Tuesday, Oct. 14, starting at $99.99.

This small black box connects to your television’s HDMI port and lets you play games in one of three ways: popping in compatible PlayStation Vita (PSVita) game cards on the side of the unit; accessing the online PlayStation Store to download compatible PSVita games and classic PlayStation games (including PS One and PSP titles); or renting PlayStation 3 games through the PlayStation Now gaming service.

But you already knew all this, you say?

No problem, we’ve got more deets.

USA TODAY caught up with Don Mesa, director of platform marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America in San Mateo, Calif., to share a few lesser-known facts and features of this new hardware.

ON-DEMAND GAMING

When you rent full console games over the Internet through the PlayStation Now service, you’ll stream the content to your PlayStation TV box — just like you’d watch a Netflix movie or play songs though Pandora.

“You’ll get access to a library of PlayStation 3 games, without the need to drive to the store or wait for the game to download,” explains Mesa. “Just hit play, and get right into the game.”

Along with the highly-anticipated game God of War Ascension, PlayStation Now offers more than 150 games, including popular third-party titles such as Capcom’s Ultra Street Fighter IV.

Prices vary, but games can be played for as low as a $1/day on a weekly rental.

Note: PlayStation Now is also available on PS Vita, PS3, PS4 and select Sony TVs.

PUSH TO PS4

Living room TV tied up? You can stream PS4 games to a different room in the house.

“If you’re a PS4 owner, use the Remote Play feature to stream a PS4 game from your console to a PS TV through your home network,” says Mesa. “So, if the living room is tied up, just use Remote Play to send your PS4 game up to the bedroom and keep playing on PS TV.”

All PS4 games support Remote Play unless it requires a special peripheral, such as the PlayStation Move motion controller or PlayStation Eye camera.

Remote Play can also be used to push PS4 games to a PSVita portable gaming console.

PARENTAL CONTROLS

PS TV supports many kid-friendly games, including Minecraft and LEGO Movie The Videogame, so it’s an ideal option for families with children.

PS TV also offers parental controls that let mom or dad manage the console use by time and day, gameplay by ESRB [Entertainment Software Rating Board] recommended age rating, and block in-store purchases.

Speaking of LEGO Movie The Videogame, PlayStation TV is also available in a PlayStation TV bundle ($139.99), which includes the PlayStation TV system, DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller, 8GB memory card and a game voucher for Warner Bros.’ hit LEGO game.

MEMBER BENEFITS

PlayStation Plus members ($49.99/year) will be pleased to know they can access their account on PS TV, with no added costs.

“For those of you who already have a membership for PS4, PS3 or PS Vita, it’ll transfer over to PS TV — which means the PS Plus benefits, including any compatible PS Vita games you get from the Instant Game Collection, can also be used on your PS TV,” says Mesa.

PlayStation Plus members get access to a rotating collection of free titles every month. In October, this includes indie titles Pix the Cat and Rainbow Moon.

TAKE CONTROL

Inferior game controllers are one of the biggest pain points in most set-top box gaming systems (like Ouya).

PS TV, however, is compatible with both DUALSHOCK 4 (bundled with PS4 console) and DUALSHOCK 3 (PS3) wireless controllers, so you’ll have the flexibility of choosing either one for your gaming session.

If you’re a seasoned PlayStation gamer, perhaps you’ve got a spare controller in a drawer you’re not currently using?

JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM

A few other details:

• Under the hood, PS TV is very similar to a PS Vita. It’s powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, PowerVR SGX543MP4+ graphics unit and 512MB of RAM (system memory). Along with HDMI, PS TV also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and Ethernet.

In Japan, PS TV has been sold under another name: Vita TV. Unlike the all-black PS TV, Vita TV is a white machine, which launched in late 2013.

This is the first time gamers outside of Japan can play PSVita titles on a big-screen TV. Not all games are supported — especially if they require the PSVita’s touch-screen, gyroscope or camera but most games will work on PS TV.

PlayStation is releasing custom themes for PS TV, allowing you to change the background and icons. Three will be available for free at launch Crystal, Four Seasons and Stitching and some themes in the future will be tied to games, such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Tearaway and Freedom Wars.

PS TV also offers entertainment content, with movies and TV shows available to buy or rent from PlayStation Store.

Youth bus gears up for Safer 6 campaign in Rowley Regis

First published

A YOUTH bus is gearing up to tour Rowley Regis as part of Sandwell’s Safer 6 campaign.

Young people can hop on board and get involved with activities as well as discuss issues and find out how best to keep safe during the autumn months.

It features laptops with 4G internet access, a DJ workstation, a PlayStation games room with PS3 and PS4, an Xbox 360 with Kinect and a ‘chill out’ and workshop area as well as arts and craft activities.

The bus has already been in Oldbury and will pull up at Britannia Park on Thursday October 16 from 5pm until 6.45pm and at Cradley Heath Community Centre, Reddal Hill Road, from 7pm until 8.30pm.

It will by the Brickhouse Estate, Harvest Road, on Saturday October 18 from 2pm until 4pm.

The Safer 6 campaign involves a wide range of organisations in Sandwell joining forces and targeting their resources to help keep the borough safe and clean as the nights draw in and during the bonfire and fireworks season.

Sandwell Council, Sandwell Police and West Midlands Fire Service and are all involved in the scheme.

Councillor Simon Hackett, the council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Organisations work closely together day in day out to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

“Safer 6 is all about us targeting our efforts and providing added reassurance, crime prevention and safety during the darker nights, fireworks and bonfire season – a time of year when problems can often increase and more young people may become victims of crime.

“We use the bus and youth activities all year round to build relationships with young people and it will be putting on extra sessions in each town during Safer 6.”

3G routers + Aircard combo for wifi sharing in Thailand | any experiences?…

Not a lot of detail provided re: budget, apps, bandwidth required, etc. etc., etc.

Thanks for responding to this – the questions you have asked are already a huge help.

Is the 30 day requirement firm?

Yes, it is a ship which is visiting for 4 weeks

What about local storage? Printing? Intranet? Web hosting?

AFAIK it is just for the crew to use for basic interwebs and emails, the IT guru on board will instruct the crew that file sharing and larger downloads are not allowed.  A couple of the routers will be used to provide an internet connection for the ship’s intranet.  I need to ask more questions on this.

Have you identified which service providers offer 3G/LTE in the the exact physical location?

I will do a site test over the weekend, coverage maps say the area is just outside the AIS 3G footprint, but DTAC’s map says it has 3G coverage.

No LTE that I can see so far.

I assume you understand that most mobile data plans are capped at 1 ~ 10 GB, after which speeds may be limited to 128 – 384 Kbps, perhaps requiring you to re-subscribe.

Yes, was aware of this, I spoke to both AIS and DTAC so far, and they both have a 12Gb plan available which shapes once that limit is reached.  In this case the boat is prepared to recharge for additional packages.

For up to 120 devices you’ll need some robust routers, maybe look at Cradlepoint and Cisco (series 8xx). Obviously you’ll need a number of routers, maybe 4 ~ 10 depending on capabilities; you’re asking a lot of the router as it needs to bridge, route, switch and move packets through the 3G/WAN interface to the LAN interface. Some of these consumer-grade options (TP-Link, D-Link, Asus) may not be able to support your requirements. The bottleneck will be the routing (packets pe second) into/out of the 3G “device”

Understood, thanks for pointing this out.  I figured there would be a bottleneck from/to the 3G service.  The budget is limited and I’ve been asked to source readily available equipment.  I’ll also check out the Cradlepoint Cisco equipment to see if this is feasible.

I might also talk with AIS, TOT, CAT, 3BB to see if any wireless P2P/WiFi services are available – typically these have a 12 month minimum but maybe you can negotiate something?

Good idea.  I did ask AIS and DTAC, but they weren’t very encouraging given that it is only a 4 week, one-off gig.

I might also survey the users to see what types of phones they have, and which service providers, to see if some sub-set can “manage” their own mobile hotspot on their phone; reimbursing them for the cost/service.

They are all foreign crew arriving on the same ship, so this is probably not an option.  Have suggested to the ship’s IT guru that they consider getting local sim cards for the crew – but the primary goal is to have an acceptable working wifi across several 3G routers at this stage

I might test a few options ahead of time, and even consider different models/manufacturers rather than settling on a single model, which may have some failure mode which remains undiscovered until you are into deployment.

This was my first thought too.  However it will depend on how quickly they send the funds to do this.  My ideal plan is to test a couple of different sets of equipment to see which works best, and then scale up from there.

Maybe your current suppliers can help suss out options?

They have been good so far with info – but none of them have used the routers in this set up before – hence posting here to see if anyone had previous/recent experience with particular models and providers.

To get a couple of posts confirming that some of the equipment options I have looked at do work will be a good start for me to purchase some gear and set something up to test with.

cheers
